Very happy to see this charcoal drawing go to a new home, thank you Laurie and Jim Brigan of Airdrie Alberta.
To approach painting using the Wabi Sabi aesthetic means to honor and appreciate rough textures, natural materials, and subtle hues. This year I had a great group of students and we started out the class by exploring the back alleys of Nakusp in search of inspiration, and then took our photos and found objects to the classroom to create beautiful and surprising works. Students learned new arrangement and composition skills, and explored glazing, scumbling, antique effects and worked with textural acrylic mediums. The class is so much fun because we share our ideas and struggles, and learn a great deal from each other. The Wabi Sabi way of expressing beauty within the imperfections of life is so good for the artistic soul!
I am so happy to announce that one of my favorite drawings has found a new home here in Nakusp! " In the Stone Carver's Garden #4" is inspired by photograph I took in the gardens of Toru and Janice Fujibayashi, Toru being a well respected sculptor who resides in Crescent Bay, Nakusp. They generously allowed me to take some photos on their beautiful and simple property, and it has been challenging and rewarding for me to draw from the images I discovered there.
I am so excited to be teaching a painting style that has been near and dear to my heart. here in Nakusp! I began using collage and mixed media while I was at ACAD in the 70's and its possibilities continue to intrigue me. I love this whimsical and intuitive manner of working, and it provides a great balance to the concentrated discipline of my charcoal drawing.
I now have the above images available as 11"X14" signed limited edition reproductions for $25.00 each, and I can ship them to you for an addition cost. Inquiries can message me on FB.
Come and visit with me in my studio this summer at 206 Broadway St. Nakusp during ALFA Art Walk. My hours are Tues- Friday 9:30-12:30 and 11:00-4:00pm on Saturday. I have some new charcoal drawings works in process to show you, and many more completed works in my gallery. Prints and cards available too!
On May 23rd we traveled down to Grand Forks to participate the fundraising event "Rembrandt's Attic" . Once every 5 years Gallery 2 hosts an evening where over 35 works of art are raffled off to patrons who purchase a ticket for $200.00. The show was amazing and featured many well know artists such as Richard Reid, John Hall, Nick Bantock, and Bob Masse. I was honored to have my charcoal drawing "Spring Light #2" be the third out of 35 to be selected, and it was a very enjoyable evening for everyone. Gallery 2 in Grand Forks is a stunning exhibition space and worth stopping if you are traveling through!
